Mi hija
follows an immigrant mother, Mamá, and her first-generation American daughter, Hija, as they try their best to get along. However, Mamá's high expectations push her daughter away into a sea of self-deprecating thoughts and isolation.
Who is this for?
Anyone who has had a turbulent mom-daughter experience in adolescence or as a mom.
Director's Statement
I wanted to write a story that all immigrant families could relate to: a story about how important it is for families to be informed about the warning signs of depression and how it's not one-size-fits-all illness.

Mi hija captures the complications of the mom/daughter relationship and how turbulent it can become when a teenager turns into a young woman. It is a story about a mom, Mamá, and her daughter, Hija, who are trying their best. Hija wants to meet Mamá's high expectations, and Mamá wants to give her Hija life the life she never had.

I am currently a Pritzker Pucker Fellow, a program at Northwestern University that seeks to destigmatize mental illness through cinematic arts. Mi hija is made possible with help from the Pritzker Pucker Studio Lab to help bring awareness to depression and how it affects teens.
